Embracing God's Promise of Abundance When Hardship Endures
The Best Invitation
by Jenny on December 16th, 2014

"So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full.'" Luke 14:23

My kids love receiving invitations to birthday parties. I wish I could claim that my children simply love spending time with their friends--they do. However, I think the promise of cake and all things sweet contribute to my children's excitement toward a birthday party.

Next week many people will celebrate the birth of Jesus with the exchange of presents. Some families will include cake and ice cream as a part of their Christmas celebration. And while my children anxiously anticipate the upcoming festivities, I wonder if they realize that an even greater celebration awaits them.

In Luke 14 Jesus relates the Kingdom of Heaven to a group of religious leaders by telling a story of a man who prepared a great feast. The host of the party extended many invitations. However, when the date arrived all of the guests declined to attend citing poor excuses. One guest said, "I have just bought a field and must inspect it. Please excuse me." (Who buys a field without having already inspected it?) Another said, "I have just bought five pairs of oxen, and I want to try them out.  Please excuse me." (Really? A day with smelly oxen rather than a nice party?) Another said, "I now have a wife, so I can’t come." (Excuse me? What new wife wouldn't enjoy a nice party with her new husband??) (Luke 14:18-20, parenthesis mine.)

Infuriated by his guests' responses the master tells his servant, "Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame. . . . 'There is still room for more,'" the servant replied. "So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full.'" (Luke 14:21-23)

Jesus came to earth at Christmas time in order to make it possible for us to attend the greatest celebration ever. Hebrews 2:14 tells us that, "Because God's children are human beings--made of flesh and blood--the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could He die, and only by dying could He break the power of the devil, who had the power of death."

Jesus died for everyone (2 Corinthians 5:15). All of us have received an invitation to this great banquet. In John 14:2 Jesus said, "There is more than enough room in my Father's home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?" Revelation 19:9 reads, "Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb."

We have all received an invitation. Have you RSVP'd to the Banquet Host?

In Matthew 22:14 Jesus warned, "Many get invited; only a few make it." (The Message)

Let us not allow the date to pass us by without a response. Respond to God by receiving the free gift of God, eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23). It will be the best invitation you ever receive.

Crossing Your Jordan

I am a stay-at-home, homeschooling, Bible-teaching mom of six, and wife to my college sweetheart. I believe everyone can live a life of abundance through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and radical obedience to His Word.

Do you have a relationship with God through Christ? If not, I would consider it pure joy to tell you about God, why you need Him, and how to be reconciled to Him through Christ.

If you know Christ as your Savior, do you know how to follow Him as Lord? If, like me, life's challenges have caused you to question whether you truly want to follow God's plan for you, or you simply don't know how to recognize God's ways due to a lack of biblical literacy, I would love to teach you what I've come to know about God through His Word.

Regardless of who you are (or aren't) or what you have (or haven't) done, I invite you to find a comfy spot, grab a cup of coffee and a Bible, and enter your contact information below.
